What is Otoplasty (Ear Aesthetics)?

Otoplasty actually means ear aesthetics as it is literally. It is the process of reshaping the auricle and making it more natural and aesthetic. There are many surgical techniques and methods. It can be successfully performed by a number of surgeons.

Who are the right candidates for Otoplasty (Ear Aesthetics)?

Otoplasty can be done to anyone who is not satisfied with their ear shape. Complaints like ear size and prominence which disturbs patients, can be obtained with various otoplasty techniques which makes the patient satisfied with natural results

The prominent ear might create a negative psychological affect for children at school environment. Especially for preschool children, the ideal age for otoplasty surgery is around 5 years old.

What Are The Surgical Techniques For Otoplasty?

Otoplasty surgery technique is performed under general anesthesia. Average operation time varies between 1-2 hours. The desired shape to be given to the ear with an incision made behind the ear is made with some suture techniques. Depending on the condition of the case, cartilage excision is made if necessary and a natural aesthetic ear is tried to be obtained.

After the surgery, the incision behind the ear is closed with a suture. Since it is behind the ear, there may be a faint scar that is not noticeable and does not bother.

If the dressings are worked sterile during and after the operation, no signs of infection are encountered. When the stitches used for the patient are suitable and of good quality, there is no opening and deformation in the ear. Hematoma (blood accumulation) is not observed when good hemorrhage control and postoperative dressing and follow-up are performed.

How is the Follow-up Period For Otoplasty Patients?

After the operation, every other day dressing and controls take a total of 10 days. On the tenth day, after removing the stitches of the patient, the patient can return to his daily social life, except that it is recommended to only sleep with an elastic head bandage at night.
